On Safe and Efficient UKC Management
Navigating in shallow water areas – such as in dredged channels – is a challenging task for ship navigation officers. Major factors that cause a reduction in the ship’s under-keel clearance (UKC) are heel (due to turning or the effect of wind), ship squat, ship dynamic motions in waves and hydrodynamic interaction with other ships. A UKC algorithm that integrates all major UKC factors is proposed and implemented in a software solution that can alert navigators to the potential danger of limited under-keel clearance. The computed results are particularly useful for the onboard passage planning procedures to optimize payload, estimate the tidal window, and ensure safe transit speed through UKC critical areas along a planned route.
