Maritime Applications for Fuel Cells

Fuel cells are in the next coming decade to be considered as a serious alternative to existing maritime propulsion and auxiliary power systems. Initial introduction and implementation of the technology in the maritime sector could be optimal in LNG tankers and especially cruise ships where demands concerning vibrations, sound levels and pollution are the main concern. The primary challenge is to merge the high maritime safety levels and the fuel handling/operating aspect. Secondarily it is necessary to gain real life test data, i.e. how the fuel cell system operates when fully integrated in a maritime environment.
