Fleet Competitiveness and the regulation of the ma
A major determinant of competitiveness and profitability is a shipping company’s ability to maximize output obtainable from a given combination of inputs. This article looks at the production unit in shipping – the ship – and examines the dynamics affecting the competitiveness of fleets. It is argued that the opportunities for creating competitive advantages depend less on the ship than on the economic and political conditions created ashore. The article outlines the strategies for sustaining the competitiveness of fleets and shows how regulatory competition among maritime nation-states does not necessarily have to lead to downward pressures on rules and regulatory standards. The article concludes that the understanding of the regulatory work in IMO on Green House Gases (GHG) is an important key for national fleet owners and policymakers to improve national fleet competitiveness. The article ends by suggesting further research into the work process of creating competitive advantages through regulation.
